Jesmonite AC730

Technical information for exterior architecture

Palladio GFRC manufactures bespoke architectural components using Jesmonite® AC730. This cement-based composite combines a mineral base with a water-based acrylic liquid and can be reinforced with alkali-resistant glass fibre for decorative panels and mouldings.

Material performance

The following are manufacturer-reported AC730 material values from technical sheet TDS-AC730-25-EW. They describe the tested material, rather than every finished Palladio component or a complete facade assembly.

  • Dry density: 1,850 kg/m³. Wet density: 1,950 kg/m³.
  • Compressive strength: 58 MPa — BS EN 12390-3.
  • Flexural strength: LOP 8.9 MPa; MOR 23.6 MPa — BS EN 1170-5.
  • Water uptake / porosity: 2.26% — BS EN 1170-6.
  • Freeze–thaw resistance: 300 cycles — DD CEN/TS 12390-9.
  • Reaction to fire: A2-s1,d0 — EN 13501-1.
  • Surface burning classification: Class 1 (Class A) — ASTM E84.
  • Standard base-to-liquid mix ratio: 5:1 by weight.
  • Initial set: 30–45 minutes at 18°C, without retarder.

Interpreting the data. Density is a material property, not an installed panel weight. Thickness, ribs, returns, reinforcement and fixings affect the weight and performance of each component. Freeze–thaw cycles are a test result, not a service-life guarantee. Fire classifications depend on the tested construction; finishes, sealers, insulation, backing and the complete wall assembly require their own assessment. Ask for the applicable test evidence before specifying.

Applications and design possibilities

AC730 is suitable for decorative cladding, exterior architectural details, mouldings and sculptural forms. It can reproduce stone-like finishes and detailed mould surfaces. Thin reinforced construction can reduce component weight compared with an equivalent solid form; the actual saving depends on the design. These components are intended as non-loadbearing architectural elements.

Colours, texture and samples

Explore smooth moulded surfaces, patterned or fluted relief, and exposed-aggregate stone effects. Final appearance depends on the mould, aggregate, colour blend and finishing process. Confirm Palladio availability through a physical sample rather than selecting from a screen.

Custom colours and textures should be reviewed for exterior exposure, colour stability and repeatability. Approve a representative control sample and, where appropriate, a project mock-up covering joints, corners, returns and lighting conditions.

Panel design and installation

Panel size, thickness, reinforcement, stiffening and fixing locations are project-specific. A universal maximum panel size or span cannot be inferred from material strength figures. Coordinate the component design with the structural engineer, facade designer and installer.

The project design should address wind pressure and suction, self-weight, impact, movement, support tolerances, corrosion resistance, lifting and access. Detail joints, flashings, drainage and ventilation with the surrounding wall system. AC730 cladding does not replace the wall’s weather barrier.

Use approved shop drawings and fixing details. Do not select anchors, adhesives or support spacing from general material data alone. Local building-code compliance and any required assembly testing must be established for the intended installation.

Sealing, cleaning and care

Jesmonite identifies Flexiguard and Penetrating Sealer as compatible options for AC730, depending on the application. Agree the sealer and finish with Palladio and test their effect on colour, sheen and stain resistance. Low permeability and stain resistance do not mean that a component or facade assembly is waterproof.

Request a maintenance plan for the approved finish. As a conservative starting point, trial gentle cleaning on a small inconspicuous area and obtain advice before using aggressive chemicals, abrasives or pressure washing. Inspect joints, sealants, fixings and exposed finishes as part of the building’s maintenance programme. Resealing requirements depend on exposure and the selected treatment.

Manufacturing and handling

The manufacturer’s user guide calls for controlled mixing, curing and dry storage. It reports more than 90% of ultimate strength after the first 24 hours under appropriate conditions; this is not an automatic release time for lifting, transport or installation. Finished panels must be supported and protected to avoid distortion and surface marking.

Raw base and liquid are stored between 5°C and 25°C, protected from freezing and contamination. This storage range is not a finished-product outdoor service-temperature rating. Handling and fabrication must follow the current safety data sheets.
